When an Elasticsearch node fails to join a cluster with a cluster UUID mismatch error, the node's persisted cluster identity conflicts with the cluster it is trying to connect to. This is a safety mechanism preventing a node from accidentally merging data from one cluster into another. It surfaces during cluster migrations, reconfigurations, or when automation reuses storage volumes across clusters.
What the Cluster UUID Is and Where It Lives
Every Elasticsearch cluster has a UUID (Universally Unique Identifier) that is generated when the cluster first forms. This UUID is stored as part of the global cluster state metadata, which every node persists to its data directory. On disk, the cluster state is written to files under <data.path>/nodes/0/_state/ (in versions before 8.0) or directly under <data.path>/_state/ (in 8.0+). The file is named with a pattern like global-N.st where N is a generation counter.
When a fresh node with no data directory starts, its cluster UUID is _na_ - uncommitted. It can join any cluster. Once the node joins a cluster and receives the first cluster state update, it commits the cluster UUID to disk. From that point forward, the node will refuse to join any cluster with a different UUID. This commitment is tracked by a clusterUUIDCommitted flag in the persisted metadata.
Coordinating-only nodes are an exception. They hold no persistent data and can rejoin different clusters after a restart without UUID conflicts. The constraint applies to data nodes and master-eligible nodes whose data directories contain shard data or cluster state that would be corrupted by mixing with another cluster.
Common Scenarios That Trigger This Error
The error messages vary slightly by version but follow a pattern:

A node from a different cluster trying to join. This is the most common case. A node was part of cluster A, and someone changes its discovery configuration to point at cluster B. The node's data directory still has cluster A's UUID committed, so it refuses to join cluster B. This happens frequently when reusing VMs or containers across environments without cleaning the data directory.
Data directory accidentally shared or reused. In containerized environments, persistent volume claims can be re-bound to new pods. If a PVC from a previous Elasticsearch cluster is mounted on a node in a new cluster, the old cluster UUID on the volume conflicts with the new cluster's UUID. Kubernetes StatefulSet reconfigurations and Helm chart upgrades that change the cluster name while keeping the same PVCs trigger this.
Snapshot restore to the wrong cluster. Restoring a snapshot does not change the restored indices' association. But if a node has been rebuilt and its data directory seeded from a backup or volume snapshot of a different cluster, the cluster state metadata in that directory carries the old UUID.
Full cluster restart with changed discovery configuration. If all nodes restart simultaneously and the discovery configuration has changed (different seed hosts, different cluster name), nodes may attempt to form a new cluster. Some nodes may succeed in bootstrapping a new cluster with a new UUID while others still hold the old UUID and fail to join.
Finding the Cluster UUID
To check the running cluster's UUID:

If you cannot reach the cluster API because the node will not start, you can inspect the persisted cluster state. The elasticsearch-node tool (available in the Elasticsearch bin/ directory) can read the on-disk metadata:

This will display information about the node's persisted cluster state, including the UUID. In some versions, bin/elasticsearch-node detach-cluster is available to clear the committed UUID without wiping the entire data directory.
Resolution Steps
The correct fix depends on which scenario caused the mismatch.
If the node should join the new cluster and has no needed data: Delete the contents of the data directory. This removes the committed UUID and all shard data. Before deleting, confirm that the shards are replicated elsewhere or the data is expendable.

If the node should rejoin its original cluster: Fix the discovery configuration to point back to the correct cluster. Check cluster.name, discovery.seed_hosts, and cluster.initial_master_nodes in elasticsearch.yml. The node will rejoin once it can reach the cluster matching its committed UUID.
If you need to keep the data but move the node to a new cluster: Use the elasticsearch-node detach-cluster command (available in Elasticsearch 7.x+). This resets the committed cluster UUID to _na_ without deleting shard data. The node can then join a new cluster. However, this is a last-resort operation - the resulting state may have inconsistencies if the cluster metadata differs from what the shard data expects.

For Kubernetes environments: Check that PVCs are correctly bound and not recycled from a previous cluster. If using a StatefulSet, verify that the volumeClaimTemplates match the expected cluster. When decommissioning a cluster, delete the PVCs to prevent reuse.
Prevention Practices
Label persistent volumes with the cluster name and UUID. Provisioning automation should verify that a data directory is either empty or matches the target cluster before starting a node.
In Kubernetes, use PVC naming conventions that include the cluster name. Never reuse PVCs across different Elasticsearch clusters. When tearing down a cluster, include PVC deletion in the cleanup procedure.
For VM-based deployments, wipe data directories during decommission. If repurposing a node from one cluster to another: stop the node, delete the data directory, update the configuration, then start. Attempting to shortcut this by changing cluster.name without clearing the data directory is the most frequent cause of UUID mismatch errors in practice.
